New Year's Resolutions

1/1/2025 You can commit to new resolutions anytime, but the new year provides an extra incentive to start healthy habits or new hobbies. Once the busyness of the holidays ends, the month of January offers you a chance to slow down and focus on yourself. But how do you set and commit to a resolution? According to one study, only 12% of those who made resolutions last year felt they were able to stick to them. Use some tips below to set a New Year’s resolution for long-lasting change. 1. Pick ONE goal. It can be tempting to implement changes in every aspect of your life, but picking one well-thought-out goal will be easier to stick to than many generic ones. Even achieving one small goal can boost your confidence and help you reach bigger dreams in the future. 2. Be specific. Avoid generic goals such as “lose weight” or “travel more.” Ambiguous goals are easy to forget, so try setting SMART goals. For example, set goals with specific parameters to make them more achievable, such as “lose 10 pounds by June” or “visit one foreign country.” 3. Make a detailed plan. Having a plan for achieving your New Year’s resolution will help you stay organized and on track. Write down your goal, then break it into smaller steps. Set a timeline for each step, note any potential obstacles and what can help you reach your goal. 4. Use your support network. You don’t have to tackle your resolution alone. Having your friends and family keep you accountable and cheer you on can help you stay motivated. You can even join social media groups working toward similar goals for extra encouragement. 5. Renew your motivation. When you start a new habit, sticking to your game plan might feel easy, but as the year continues, you might lose motivation. Review your original plan and reaffirm why you wanted to set this resolution. Consider the benefits of achieving your goal and practice resiliency in facing challenges. Remember that change is a journey. You might reach your goal in one month or two years, face hurdles along the way or have to change details of your original plan. Forget perfection, be kind to yourself and keep going.
